Craig - IMO a spaniel is likely to pace it's hunting if hunted for long periods without finds, maybe not by much but by enough not to have the bang off the lead that puts it above the rest in a trial, so it's not a good way to increase fitness and stamina unless as said before you can go rabbit shooting every day and change dogs every half hour… unlikely for most.

The dog will pace itself over an exercise run, build muscle and fitness and then have the stamina to go harder for longer when hunted on game.

Thanks for the clarification. Opposite of what I thought then, but as I said, I don't have spaniels.
