I noticed this topic has been resurrected and I started it four months ago. I now have an in season young bitch for the first time, so I am getting to know the difference myself! She is becoming very bossy, well more bossy than usual, and snarly like some wild mountain lioness if she gets a high value article and one of the males walks past (if they dare, that is). she is all over my husband when he comes in at tea time, she scoots about, advancing and retreating, wiggling her whole body, rubbing herself all over him, plenty of toe licking, his toes I mean. she can be hyper one minute, aloof the next. Twelve year old dog ignores her mostly, four year old just stands around, looks like he's trying to remember where he put his car keys, or specs. Last night was the first good nights sleep for me for a good few days, due to four year old dog settling abit better.
Both males are neutered by the way. I daresay we will all get used to it, and one the whole I am enjoying having a bitch, but her focus and attention are all over the place at the moment.

I was noticing yesterday that my 9 month old lab had been peeing loads and was licking herself more and then today there is a slight reddish discharge so I guess she’s starting her first season. First time I’ve had a bitch so all new to me.

this was an interesting read! I had a rescue bitch, she was fab but she would only ever do as I asked and no one else, my parents have a male and a female, the boy is very into his training, smart and willing to please, the girl is a whole other story! she's very clever and has trained them well so she does everything her own way in her own time!
Im picking up my boy puppy in a few weeks, he will be the first male ive had, having worked as a training and behaviour advisor for a charity I found in general the male dogs bonded with staff easier and were easier to train and the females a bit more independent, but this was obviously a wide selection of breeds and not just working dogs, other staff found the females easier to work with
