Re: Self preservation
A couple of questions one for you one for the forum in general 1 Is he like this when asked to hunt on any ground or does he hunt like this only on areas where there is or likely to be a lot of scent ie on a driven shoot? 2 Would forum members in general regard a springer dog as big at about 48lbs?...

Re: Self preservation
He has two different gears, when hunting for lost (shot) birds he is a lot more measured, I should add, if the bird has fallen into heavy cover and I don't have a clear line a will walk back and hunt/quarter him through the cover. The worry I have is when he is hunting/quartering to flush he throws ...

Re: Self preservation
I was presuming you've done a fair bit of quartering/hunting in cover with a spaniel of this age but now I'm not so sure. You say he's a peg dog, does he retrieve birds out of cover or doesn't he get the chance? Naj Naj, he's primary role is as a peg dog, bit of an experiment, my brother an...

Re: Self preservation
Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. Looks like I may have to be selective as to where I hunt him, in the hope he calms down a bit and learns to consider the ground. What surprises me is that this is the most mild mannered spaniel I've seen. He will happily lay down at the peg and just wa...

Self preservation
Evening folks, Do dogs develop self preservation with more experience? The reason I ask is I have a 25month old ESS that has just finished his first season as a peg dog. He exceeded all my expectations and really contributed towards a great season. On the last day of the season we had a walked up cl...

Re: Credible Cockers!
Looks like this is now national news!
The red top newspaper The Sun is running a story with the headline -
"Her Majesty champion Gundog stands accused of not being a proper Cocker"
Such a terrible shame it's come to this.

Re: Advise - picking feather
Thanks for your responses, to answer your questions. Munstyman I didn't see him do this but I gather the dog pinned the bird to the ground then jumped around it then pinned it again several times. Naj Yes he is very soft mouthed, and he has had several warm birds placed for him, some he picked and o...

Re: Advise - picking feather
Wullie, yes it's my brothers dog, I have a 6 month younger dog that doesn't have this issue. His dog has been on cold game since Last Sept, less so over the height of summer but again on de frosted game in late August. He has always been less retrieve and more hunting oriented, hence why he left it ...

Advise - picking feather
Morning, Like me my brother has a ESS princibly as a peg dog. The dog is now 2.5 years old and from good breeding. He has always been a bit of a fumbler with dummies often dropping them out of his mouth on the return, then picks it up and delivers to hand. Almost as if his grip is weak and with the ...
