Frost Bite

Post by M Cairns »

Last day of the season, blizzard conditions to the extent that keepers day had to be called off at lunch time

In the evening noticed quite a few lesions on my young lab, on his legs, snout and on his testimonials :(

Vet visit the next day resulted in anti - biotics which reduced inflamation and some improvement after a few days. He still has some hair loss.

Second visit was able to see the dermatologist who confirmed friends suggestions that it was frost bite.
I have heard of only one other dog suffering from this which was also a small yellow lab. Perhaps their skin is slightly more sensitive, I don't know.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Apart from making the little chap a lovely poser pouch  I think I will just have to allow him to stand on a drive when snow is lying.

Any other suggestions?

Must have been seriously cold, I know that the guys across the water often use dog coats (well the dogs do),
I have considered one for my Lab the neoprene ones seem to help protect against cold especially if water work is involved.

When the temperature is around freezing and they get a water retrieve on the first drive, sitting around for the next retrieve can soon have them Shivering.

I think we get a bit hung up about them over here, Quotes like: 'I see your dog is a bit of a wuss with his winter coat on' :naughty:
