got told by a trainer that my dog won't make a gundog
Hi I have a 9month old cocker bitch.
Recently I have been having problems with recall with the dog. Good days and bad days. So with me going on holiday recently I decided to leave her with my gundog trainer whilst I was away. Hoping they could make some leeway with her. i phoned up when I got back and was told she wasn't likely to make a gundog. But apart from playing up recently she has been making progress. And was on par with a 8month pup. Should I give up or still plough through.
Would love to hear some success story's or advice as after hearing that I feel as low as I could.

Can't give any advice apart from get yourself a session with one or two other different trainers before you give up hope.
What were their reasons for her not being able to be trained as a gundog? Surely can't be just based on her recall.

Very strong willed hunter I'll fixate on a smell at times. But will turn on whistle. She will retrieve as well but like I said good days and bad. She will be good on a training cord apart from when she knows when it's time to go in.

I don't want to give up as this is my first proper gun dog and the attachment is there

If she hunts and retrieves I
would seek out another opinion from another trainer. I'ts not possible to assess without seeing the two of you together

Written off at 9 months
I might not be an expert dog trainer but thats a bit harsh. Give the dog a chance. I remember someone else I know with a springer being told the same, the dogs working just fine now.

Thankyou for all your posts. I know it's there I think it's just getting out of that puppy stage.

Seems at face value that the dog is normal, or certainly not any different to any other dog of the same age. I agree with other comments, get some better advice.

Sounds like your trainer is an idiot....
