Re: Young lurcher
Aaaanyway, since advice has been a bit thin on the ground on this thread, OP, a very good DVD for your basic lurcher training is 'Purdey's Progress'- it's pretty easily available. The guy is training a collie (? I think- maybe a Kelpie?) based lurcher and we see everything from a tiny pup to her first outing on the lamp and ferreting. As for retrieving, the advice Wullie ('Trekmoor') gives on here about getting pups retreiving anything and everything, often to his doorstep, is almost identical to what this guy recommends, and IMO good advice whatever the breed.
I love lurchers, and if you get a good one of the right cross they can be the ultimate versitile dog that can turn it's hand to most things.

I've a lurcher pup whippet greyhound x bull greyhound, I'll be training it the same way I train my spaniels so could I post on here with its progress and get people's advice on how to how not to do things? I would of thought so? Any breed or cross breed of dog with intention to become a pleasurable companion in or out of the countryside will benefit greatly from gundog basic training. Ask Simon Dixon to show you his old videos of his Australian cattle dog cross lurchers schooling better than 95percent of all the dogs you see on shoots or at some trials
Re: Young lurcher
Of course you may! With one proviso; that you start a diary on a lurcher forum, any lurcher forum not just the one I found, about the day to day problems you encounter when training your Springer.springer-spaniel wrote:I've a lurcher pup whippet greyhound x bull greyhound, I'll be training it the same way I train my spaniels so could I post on here with its progress and get people's advice on how to how not to do things? If I was training my Springer or cross breed to perform the basic duties of a lurcher I'm sure I'd be welcomed with open armsJudy wrote:Of course you may! The lurcher would benefit greatly from gundog training basics whereas a gundog would not benefit from the training other than basic gundog training a lurcher bred for running would. 'lurcher' actually it could be a 3 quarter Springer quarter grayhound for all we know. .actually I should read the thread properly as it probably says how the original posters dog is bred.

Re: Young lurcher
I'd be interested to hear about your lurcher's progress, even if this post was tongue-in-cheek. It's the same training, regardless of breed, and who's to say discussions of your methods with the lurcher pup won't be of use to someone training a 'conventional' gundog breed, or any breed really, I'm sure they would be.springer-spaniel wrote:I've a lurcher pup whippet greyhound x bull greyhound, I'll be training it the same way I train my spaniels so could I post on here with its progress and get people's advice on how to how not to do things? Re: Young lurcher
I do have a lurcher her name is nettle aka nettie, she will be steady on and off the lead to all stock and quarry, sit/stop to whistle recall to whistle and hunt up freely on command within reasonable distance to me, carry all game back tenderly to hand and live (I hope), actually is there a pattern or similarity starting to appear here??...

I don't see why a lurcher should not be like a spaniel, all my spaniels are like lurchers !
