Video working my GSP and getting backing

Post by Cambusvale »

This was taken last month and due to my bad camera work was going to leave it of my you tube. I gave it some thought and some editing and got some shots saved. The great pity is the flush of the bird, I seem to watch it all but fail to keep my hand pointing in the same direction as what I see. So I got a good shot of the backing of the point from my young pup but the hard flush went amiss. Some day I will get this right though if you listen for it you here the hen chirping before flushing.

There's only one thing better than seeing a GSP on point, & that's seeing two GSPs on point. :-D I'm curious, why did you pull the dog off the first point?

He has a way of telling you it's scent and not game. He looks at me or moves, if it is game he does no movement like the point that is backed.

The puppy on the other hand wags its tail with scent and goes still on game in front of it

Nice. Curious as to why the dog left the bird and cast off to the right again, he eventually came back on though. The gap exists for a bracemate to go in after a back once the dog has left the point and prove the mark, then your dog would have had a black mark against it. Did he chase that bird up or did the pup go in, the clip finished rather abruptly. Nice looking dogs.

The pup was not off the lead until I went forward to film the dog on point, when getting close the pup went on point so I thought this was a good time to use this as a training exercise that is why I reverse with the camera to let you see the pup pointing and supplying backing. I never run my dogs in braces unless encouraging a puppy to get out with a tutor dog.

The dog cast right from first point as I conclude it was pursuing a cock bird that flushed far right after legging it. On this cast the dog after going right turned back left into the tree line, now I do not know if it was pursuing the hen scent but this is what it pointed after entering the trees and I got close with my camera, the pup backed this point and the dog was commanded to flush which it did. This is where I came unstuck, the bird and dog got tangled in the long grass, I thought it had pegged the bird, but the bird broke free of the long grass and flew right but my dog was hot now and broke right as well, I had to whistle and verbal command it to stop. It came to sit 6 foot from the tussock and the pup was sitting in front of the tussock, and all my camera could see was blue sky and clouds as I forgot I was holding it and more concentrated on my dogs.

Just an observation and not to be critical. If you say your dog broke (right) from a solid point to take a line on a flushed cock bird, why did you cast him of from the point? If you could see the bird flush, and you could see the dog saw it, the command to hunt on was setting the dog up to fail. The dog should never have left the point, it should have proved that bird. A more seasoned dog in a trial situation would have showed that dog up. Lastly, if you had your pup on a lead prior to its back, you should have kept the lead on it, chaos was sure to follow once the bird broke even if the pointing dog was steady, and taking the lead off the pup was going to unhinge the stability. It was a good find eventually and you might have kept a hand on the pup. I like to slip a line over a pups head once it establishes a point, and especially on a back just to be able to correct the break immediately instead of being in a position where one has to run the dog down and in that case, largely, the moment is lost.

It was not a solid point on the first stop, look closely the dog looks to me twice, I confirmed this dog shows it has no game in front it has winded scent and needs to learn not to stop just check back in its quarter until it gets the bird stopped by hunting it down by scent spread and zeroing on in, this is what this dog needs to learn not become sticky on scent like it did, it let the cock run off so it could fly. The older dog must learn to get close fast not dwell on old scent but chase down fresh scent & hold or handle the cock or any bird before it can decide to run or fly, my dogs need to get experience of this especially when set loose on Partridge or Grouse later in the year.

I do not follow about chaos was sure to follow letting it slip into point, I do not tether my dogs learning to point or steady, not done it due to more issues with tangles and causing the dog more impedance than learning it natural by verbal, discipline and touch. This is how I do it, I am not saying this suits everyone but I learnt myself how to get my first GSP to be steady and point when I 13 years old it was not hard then and it is not hard now, so I keep to my system that works for me as working long leads is not for me, I have enough tangles in fishing without dog training. In this video the pup came to halt on flush and did not pass the lead dog position but went to tussock the bird was flushed from, I must also add it had already been proven holding its own point prior so I was confident that it was steady on feather and could hold its point, watch as I walk past it, its used to me doing it as it was learning steadiness before this video was shot and held until both dogs told to flush. This is what I wanted it to test further or them to learn whichever way you want to look at it in the backing scenario, not a method I will use but on this occasion it supplied itself so I my interest was kindled in what if.

If I had known the hen was going to be stuck I would have flushed the bird but it looked like any ordinary tussock until the dogs head and hen were stuck in it at first I thought it was a vole as no bird came out at first. But both dogs learnt something from this and this is all you can ask from events planned or not.
