Bertie update

Post by Terry »

Bertie is now 22 months, and as you all know has been a little monster, these past couple months he has changed so much he is so much quieter
really a cracker, anyhow I have been having lots of problems with his retrieving he wants to play and also just will not deliver to hand.
So last weekend whilst up in Suffolk I took him back to the breeder for a little refresh.
I really could not believe what i witnessed Bertie hopped out the car and was called to heel not by me by the breeder , he immediately sat next to him and then walked off at heel off the lead and John the breeder hardly said more than two encouraging words i was dumbfounded. I have been working solid on this for 3 months and nothing. So on his hunting he is fantastic but the retrieve was not good so , I was instructed not to hunt him for a week also keep him very close at all times and concentrate on the retrieve but not in open space and go back to beginning . I.E. dummy in mouth plenty of praise 2 steps back and call him in using a high pitch. He was really pleased on the whole with Bertie and so am I however he has that glint in his eye saying i am gonna throw a mental soon. :)
I have a short Vid of his heel work which i will post once i learn how to again.

Take comfort from the fact that it is your hard work that implemented the perfect heelwork when it mattered :-D

I have an absolute nightmare trying to get my springer to heel, he's constantly bouncing off the end of the lead. Take him to my trainer, a couple of checks and you'd think he was an obedience dog! I got told by my trainer it was me who taught him to heel, wish I knew how because it doesn't work for me! :-D
