I have a two year old cocker who is pulling out a head when hunting.
Do I want to teach him to quarter and turning him on the whistle to keep him in closer, or should I just be working more on his recall and whistling him back into me, then sending him out, and when he is starting to pull away again whistle him in again?!
Sorry if this is a very stupid question!!

Re: cocker quartering
Depends………………
Is he doing that whatever the wind direction or is he just lining out on scent, does he do it whatever the cover in front of him?
If I were you I wouldn’t start recalling him as you’ll end up with him being sticky, I’d use the turn whistle.
There is an interesting thread on dogs hunting and using the wind (despite its title) here… viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20706#p231979
Hopefully one of our Scottish members can recommend a trainer to you…
