Weeping skin

Post by nswellsc »

Hi All

I returned from a weekend away to my ess having an area of skin on his neck weeping yellow sticky discharge. I have checked him for signs of trauma foreign bodies such as fleas etc and there is nothing. No cuts abrasions although his skin does looks quite pink I have bathed the area with warm water but some hours later the discharge is there again. He is not scratching the area like it is itching. He is a big stress head when separated from our other spaniel which he was this weekend although my daughter was here to look after him so obviously, he wasn't on his own. Has anyone ever seen this before or has any ideas what I am dealing with?

Many Thanks

In the short term, I'd very carefully cut away all the hair from the area that is weeping and for a couple of inches around it. Use clippers instead if scissors if you have them and it might be handy to enlist a helper to keep the dog still. Once that's done give it a good clean with salt/water and carefully dry it off. Then you need to prevent the dog from scratching because he probably will.

Depending on what you find once the hair is off and how it progresses after that it might need to be seen by a vet.
Happiness is where we find it, but rarely where we seek it.

Google on hot spot, it sound very much like it. Sometimes you can treat it yourself as Rookie suggested but beware, if you don't keep a VERY careful eye on the edges it may spread very quickly hidden under the coat, if you are at all in doubt, go to the vet. It can turn from a little spot to a very big area quickly. They can help with the clipping and give antibiotics if need be.
