Whats an acceptable level of Chastisement?
Whats an acceptable level of Chastisement?
Very new to the working dog world but having witnessed a scene this weekend I wanted to check that this was not a normal acceptable practice - a dog working on a pheasant shoot was being a bit loopy - went off for a bird but then just disappeared out of view, the owner was screaming for the dog, using a whistle - the dog didn't respond - eventually the dog returned to the owner, then got a massive telling off and hit with a stick!!!!
Seriously??
Re: Whats an acceptable level of Chastisement?
Not normal by any means, mostly because its a sure fire way of putting the dog off ever coming back again.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Come back and be hit? Even if you feel like hitting a bog off dog you should be all sweetness and light (easier said than done) and if you can't welcome the dog back at least be neutral. No, if you have seen this behaviour it is not acceptable.

Obviously this person hasn't a clue and is lazy. If it was my dog I would have gone looking for it and when I'd found it I would have growled at it, got it under it's jowls and pulled it back to where it should've been showing my displeasure with body language. I would then revisit training and try not to put the dog in the situation again.

Disgraceful, ignorant and unacceptable behaviour.

+1 Thanks for explaining to the OP what should have happened in that situation. One is done for the day with the next stop, training NOT hunting!Rothievale wrote:Obviously this person hasn't a clue and is lazy. Not acceptable chastisement, and not the sort of thing anyone in gundogs wants to go telling the internet about. There is enough fuel for the anti fire as it is.
cheers,
Alice.

OP, did you say anything to the guy wielding the stick? As Alice implied it might have been better than coming onto a forum as a new poster and spreading unverifiable rumours about unacceptable practises in the gun dog world. I'm sure there are many dog owners who lose their rags with their dogs, its not confined to gundogs by any means but if nobody complains when they see such things then it will continue.Alice wrote:Not acceptable chastisement, and not the sort of thing anyone in gundogs wants to go telling the internet about.
