By contrast I have a pup with Halaze Hickory running through the pedigree and lines on both sides to Robinsmoor Frolic who at 6 months has almost too much drive to explore (hunt later when she understands why) and enthusiasm to retrieve. Yesterday she jumped into a pond and swam for the first time without asking as she had winded something of interest on a small island out in the pond. This morning when giving her a run I put my cup of coffee down on a stack of logs 4 foot off the ground, When I turned my back the bitch jumped on top of the stack, picked up my cup, spilling my drink and brought it to me. Perhaps not the easiest pup to live with but looks like she might become a favourite to shoot over!! I was really enjoying my cup of coffee as well but had to smile .
If you get fed up with this spilling your coffee I'll have it!!! And I'm perfectly serious
She is making me feel very old but I'm not quite ready to chuck the towel in yet I 'm wondering if through gene therapy I could get a bit of her energy!!! A friend has her litter sister who he called Dora, I understand her nickname is now Doracell because she never stops!!

It is why the older I get the more I believe trials are interesting and some people enjoy them (I am on a trial committee) but for picking out future breeding dogs natural aptitude tests where a dog can make a lot of mistakes but show its intention and purpose may tell us more than trials where you have little or no idea what facilities, methods, skill and effort the handler may have used to achieve the result,
even if you agree with the result of the trial!!!
I like to see both parents to get an idea of their temperament as a happy trier will usually succeed. I have a dog pup who is a litter mate to the bitch, at present he does not like getting his feet wet but I will bet my house, pension and anything else that he will swim when asked because he loves retrieving so much he will overcome his initial reluctance to get wet when there is a dummy just out of his reach in water. It is too early in the year yet but when things have warmed up we will see. The difference between a real trier and a great dog are more subtle but I am generally perfectly happy if I think a young dog is trying to do what I ask and hope it has that extra something.

you mean the f***** hooligans I have just come in exhausted from giving them a short run and trying to keep my eyes on them, then yes I will be in touch.

House, pension and everything else perfectly safe. Day one just running in and out of shallow water, day two swimming like he is half seal! It is easy when the pups want to do the job!!
