My oldie is still going, she's 13 on midsummer day, I've noticed recently that she just walks rather than hunting about, doesn't even bother to sniff around a lot of the time but she moves freely and seems happy enough, food goes in one end and out the other normally so I guess she's fine, just getting old. Still up for gallumphing after a tennis ball though, occasionally when actually sent too.

Today was the day. Almost 14, back legs like a neglected deckchair. She was hand fed bits of steak as the vet did the necessary and was gone in seconds. The most honest dog.

Photo from Dec 2012, one of her first days out in the field. She picked a partridge that several other dogs had missed and I was as please as punch. In truth she was a Ferrari to my learner driver, but we worked it out eventually. I shall miss her.

Nothing we say will help ease the grief but those of us who have been through this will be shedding a tear with and for you.

Gone but not forgotten! At least it is over now and you don't have to worry about her anymore, getting up every day and asking yourself the question "Is today the day", is never pleasant. It doesn't get any easier, possibly worse as you start to ponder your own demise a bit as you sit with them.

Sorry to hear this PRH, as Judy posted, I'll be thinking of you this day. Take solace in all the good memories get better, and any less than good no longer feel so bad.

So sorry to hear. We, as dog owners must suffer the loss two fold, ourselves and for them. Fortunately, living in the moment is one of a dog’s greatest strengths.

Thank you. The other dogs seem a bit out of sorts, she was the grumpy old lady who told them off so I guess they need to work out the new dynamics. The spaniel was very aware something was up yesterday, she seems to have much greater emotional IQ than the labs.
It was odd not doing 4 bowls at feed time or having to check that she had been up and out during the day. Also she was a world class food inspector so the kitchen was a bit empty!

On we go. I’ll take the two labs out for a bit of training now, it’s a cracking evening here. She still looked at me when I got the dummy bag out the evening before last, the mind and spirit willing but the rest not so much.

More than once I have put out one more bowl than I needed and it just pulls at your heart a bit as you put it away realising you don't need it anymore!

Sorry to hear this. It never gets any easier no matter how many dogs you’ve had, but they live on in our memories. When I’m out shooting in old familiar places certain spots will often trigger thoughts of a find and retrieve pulled off by a long gone dog. Makes you realise how short their lives are and how we need to make the most of what time we have with them.
