In stalking circles there is an opinion that Roe deer won't graze the ground as sheep are grazing on, I'm still open on that one as we've shot deer just yards from sheep. They also say they sheep carry different kinds of ticks to deer but I've had 3 different kinds of ticks crawling on me straight after skinning a deer carcass.
I think people have just got to accept they come and play in the countryside they will eventually come across one or two ticks.
Having said all that , they are still horrible little things. :(

Sheep basically stink the field out, to a deer its much worse. You will shoot deer near sheep, just not as often as you will a week after that area is cleared of sheep. Deer get more ticks in forest because there are always more deer closer together in forest, Roe especially are not known as field dwellers at best they will pick the warm side of a stone wall to coach down during the day.

If sheep haven't been on the fell for a week or two I can practically guarantee Deer are resident there, at other times they are mostly passing through need and upwind of them

Quick update- After the replies to this post I decided to give Advantix a go and so far (fingers crossed) we haven't encountered a single tick! We even went out the other evening with a friend who has a springer and her dog ended up with at least 5 ticks crawling over him!

Thank you for sharing your fountain of knowledge you lovely people.
:perfect:  :-D

Hi, Yes! Our vet was happy to supply Advantix on my request to see how we got on with it. If I decide I wanted to order more in the future, the vet will then give me a prescription so I can order it on-line cheaper than the vets sell it for! Happy Days :-D

We have a problem with ticks too. Tickbite fever is not uncommon out here. Advantix is a product that works pretty well. I also use a spray that I apply once the dogs get back into the car that kills any stragglers.

Hi there,I have been using Billy No Mates for a while now and have found that the number of ticks on my dogs has reduced drastically but there are still the odd couple from time to time. I dont regard this product as 100% effective but it has drastically reduced the number of ticks my dogs were collecting before I tried it. Doesnt seem to have an effect on fleas though
