Milly,
One of the Training clips coming up,should be of interest to you ,(especially following your post on 'confessional') ;)
Robert
Well look forward to that and I hope so because I'm struggling to make the change to him working in the group. I read all about teach the dog in differant places and retrieves on my own property are good, but retrieves outside with distractions is proving hard even though they're limited. Sorry, don't want to take over your thread.

Polmaise, I want to commend you for really putting yourself out on the sharp, pointy end for anyone who cares to criticize to really have a go. So, the following is not a critque, but rather an observation and a question from across The Pond.

You mentioned that your dog stopped and looked to you for direction when he couldn't find the dummy, and you followed with a directional cast (which the dog took :-D ). In the US, that stopping behavior would be called 'popping' and would be frowned upon because it, allegedly, encourages the dog to become dependent upon the handler instead of using his natural abilities. That gives birth to the old addage 'Never 'handle' a dog on a mark!' I'm not sure I agree with that just yet. But, it seems it's possible that, so called 'popping', could become a habitual behavior for a dog. In the US, the dog is expected to take the intial line, or cast, until arriving at the bird, or given another direction, preceeded by a stop whistle.

Are you concerned that your dog may become too dependent upon you, and if so, what measures might you take to prevent that while still maintaining the team realtionship you have with your dog?

Aye Snick :-D ;) I have never been afraid of 'puting ones head above the parapit!' Nice to get the 'US flavour',into the equation?
As you know our mutual friend ;) MG, has often discussed the same 'popping'!

This dog is not mine>>>As Said, previously, the 'issue',or one of them, with this Yellow dog,is that it 'Hunts on its own ,when cast,ie ignoring the handler!....?I am simply 'backchaining', to the point ,of trusting the handler,on direction?....This 'training scenario',is not competition?.it is Training...?!?The fact that I dont use the stop whistle when the dog 'looks at me for direction'? in this instance is a 'plus'?...as the yellow dog was made to sit stay for a long period of time ,and 'had lost the mark'?,so was as good as a blind?>>>?.(imo),I am installing and reinforcing the original request to 'go to the area',and you will get the reward? Thus the dog will remember that when I give a direction to a 'particular', area it got the retrieve' ;) In a Trial(uk),one would have been marked a 'B', rather than a 'b+' in this situation ;)
Remember The video clip, is NOT ABOUT ME!!...It is intended as a 'training' clip',of which I have used with ,both the clients, and myself, to 'self check', ;)
Oh The gift to see oorsells as others see us? ;)

Good answers, Polmaise. If the dog is indeed 'self-employed', perhaps it's better for him to discover his limitations for himself, and that the handler has something to contribute. And, I agree that with the long wait, the 'mark' become a de facto 'blind'.

Maybe the fates will put us both in the same pub sometime, and we can close it down in the wee hours. I'd like that!

Thanks for posting those, its good to see handling demonstrated rather than read about it, much clearer to understand. I love a good ending, can you make one with a cocker now please

Just For You Milly ;)
Pip, The B&W is ,18 months old, She had been sent to another 'Dog Trainer' for 4 months .Her problem was 'squeeking'(noise at the line),and grunt squeeking', when worked! After the 4 months, she still 'squeeked', and had no focus!!!
I have been working with her for The last two months.

You wanted a 'Cocker', well here is 'Bonnie',10 months old!
She belongs to a friend of mine, who dropped it off for the weekend whilst he went to man the 'NOBS', stand at Scone Game Fair.
She has no issues, and will make a 'brilliant wee dog'(imo)

Jess, has a 'delivery problem', and does that 'circling' dancing around your feet?, (Sound familiar?)
She is a very soft dog and can act 'cowardly', and submissive, around other dogs! So I puposely done this excercise ,next to the kennels, with two dogs sitting behind her!

I notice with this dog your keeping your hands around the sides of it's face with your elbows close together is that so if it spits the dummy you don't end up with a dummy on the floor?

These are great to watch by the way.
