ALGULAN ?

It occurred to me while putting a "Spot On" type stuff onto my dogs recently that I never had this to use 30 years ago and then I remembered what I'd used instead. It was a powder called "Algulan" (if that spelling is correct) and I used to mix it in cold water then work that water into the dog's coats as they stood in a childs plastic bathtub. The next dog and the dog after that were bathed in that same water before the water was disposed of.

I found this to be a very effective way of dealing with external parasites and it never did my dogs or me any harm at all. It was eventually banned and I think the reason given was that it had caused harm in some cases. I cannot remember for sure why it was taken off the market.
Possibly Vicky or some other one time Algulan user may be able to tell me why it was banned ?

This product has been discontinued for a good many years Bill something to do with it being carcinogenic BUT you could still buy it in Ireland for ages afterwards and possibly still can. Alugan was a brilliant product and got rid of lots of little pests I used it on my first husband and he went away jolly quick I think they now make something called Aludex-i but may be wrong.

Never heard of it but many effective ectoparasiticides went off the market as they damaged the animal/human nervous system or caused cancer. Aludex is not available at the moment due to manufacturing issues but remains a useful product for demodectic mange that doesn't respond to advocate. It is a nasty product to use though and can cause severe sedation in some dogs so I wouldn' use it first line.

Alugan powder was around up until the late 1990's Vicky. I remember being told that it was being withdrawn so I bought as much as possible from my vet at the time. If used in moderation it was very good for getting rid of fleas etc.

It was brill stuff, used to use it on teh dogs and the guinea pigs. Got withdrawn cos of the effects on pople breathign the dust in.

What a daft reason for banning that product. ANY powder would cause an illness if you inhaled enough of it. I preferred Alugan to any modern product I have tried.

Reading this reminded me of my farming days. Organophosphates were the in thing at the time. Porect was an oil based organophophate that was used to eradicate mange, lice, ticks, fleas, warble fly. The liquid would be absorded into the blood of the host and any blood sucking creature would be posioned by ingestion. It was a horrible product that caused many side effects to the operator. Eventually, like many other organophosphates is was banned. These were then superseeded by a product called Ivermectin (not sure how its spelt) that was injected into cetain livestock that would combat a wide range of blood sucking creatures and was also a wormer. I wonder if it could have been developed to work on dogs?

I remember using Alugan on foxhounds at the hunt kennels. Each hound was dipped in it twice a year, Fleas never seemed to be a problem afterwards.
The masters said we had to wear boiler suits and long rubber gloves, also a face mask although not everyone bothered to. The terriers were also dipped and any pet dog that was hanging around!

I havent used Algulan, but have used Aludex for demodetic mange problem, the advocate was rubbish and just went on and on, months passing by no result, Aludex weekly baths cleared it up in 8 weeks. had to wear rubber gloves and face mask to use it, but would do so again.
