At what age

Post by AJS »

At what age to you stop letting your pups have a small amount of milk.

I have slowly decreased Ozka's milk and now he just has a splash of goats milk in some water after his meal.

He is now on Applaws with just a small amount of chopped up carrot

Dicey was having no milk by the time I collected him at 8 weeks - his Masters Eclipse was steeped in boiling water to make his puppy porridge. I continued that for several weeks slowly decreasing the amount of water, then sprinkling a little dry kibble into the dry porridge so it got a bit more 'bite' until by about 12 weeks he was eating it mostly dry - his preference with free access to plain old boring tap water (I am so mean).

As with most feeding - if it suits the dog and you are happy to feed do so - Ozka looks very well on it but a little milk won't be making any difference in the scheme of things for him.

I've never given dogs milk post weaning. Humans are the only species I believe that have milk post weaning. He doesn't need it now. It's purely us humans being a bit soft - which is easy when they're so cute.

I have given most of my dogs milk all their lives, they like it, its cheap and nutritious so, if you don't have one of the 20% or so of dogs allergic to the stuff, give it as long as you like! Doesn't do any harm, the only reason other species don't include it in their diet is they haven't learned to milk cows.

There is no need to give milk to any animal post weaning bar humans perhaps.

I have never fed any of my dogs milk.

The only dairy product they get is live yoghurt which is far less likely to create issues and has a lot of benefits (IMHO)
