Hi all,
Last time I needed guidance on dna test Sgurr and others were most helpful, now my springer girl is clear for PRA cord1, Fuco and PFK. I did the test through the AHT. I couldn't find any dna test for working cocker spaniels and I'm struggling to find any information of where to go.
I am hoping someone on here will be able to help me as I know there are tests available for PRA but I'd like to get them all done all at once.

The health tests for cockers on the KC Assured Breeders Scheme are required tests and recommended tests. Here is the link https://mykc.org.uk/protected/shared/br ... px?id=2052
Required is a BVA Eyetest, and two DNA tests one for prcd-PRA a type of retinal atrophy and the other is FN (familial nephropathy) which is a disease of the kidney and fatal. Recommended is hip scoring and gonioscopy to assess risk of glaucoma. There is an issue at the moment about the patent for the prcd-PRA test as the KC will only put results from Optigen on the MyKC website. Laboklin can either submit samples to Optigen (more expensive and slower) or do a Submitter Only result that does not go to the KC - you have the certificate of results to show to an enquirer. Iddex is another lab that can do the tests and I think it is the one that Vicky uses.
Another thread on the forum recently has been about Acral Mutilation Syndrome in cockers and the test for that is done by Antegene in France - the situation re AMS or Sensory Neuropathy as it is also called is being raised with the Breed Club and the KC - I'll post the thread if I can find it quickly as we have snow coming in!

Very pleased to hear of your springer's good results.
Like Scott says, use Labokiln for the PRA and FN.
I would do the AMS testing as a priority. It is a very nasty, incurable condition which is definitely occurring in 100% working/trialling bred cockers. (As far as I am aware there has not been a case of FN in a working type, but obviously the KC don't make a distinction within the breed.)

The Cocker Spaniel Pedigree Database http://cockerspanieldatabase.info/ does make the distinction between work and show - you can select Strain work.
The show people got to grips with FN quite some time ago and did a lot of testing and a breeding programme. The work people are not testing very much in the main - so far just the one working strain cocker Carrier recorded. But I would agree, AMS higher priority than FN.

Sorry to hijack, but out of curiosity, is there a reason that Genomia are not recommended for PRA & FN? They have a combined test I noticed when I was looking at the options.
Again, KC won't display the PRA result but they do the FN. Are they in some way less reliable a lab?

P.s. Lee, re: BVA tests (eye scheme & gonioscopy) there is a specialist optometrist in Stamford. 10 mins from where the trial was on Tuesday. If you can't find a closer vet to you able to do those tests for you, I can recommend my vet. In fact he's on the panel of examiners for the BVA Eye Scheme.

Fees for Eyetest and Gonio are on the BVA website but you can often get them discounted at a 'Clinic' - there is a group on Facebook that keep up the dates.
