Hind leg lameness in spaniel

Hi all,

My 7yr old spaniel has started becoming lame on his rear leg after working or long walks etc.

I've not been to the vets yet, I'm going to rest him for a while and see how he gets on. However at what point would you get it checked out at the vet?

Although he looks light on the leg - never fully raises it but does hobble a little bit, I can't create any discomfort in it poking and prodding which in my eyes means it must be at the hip.

I've put him on joint aid, is there anything else that can be done?

Has anyone else come across this with there dog?

He's normally a bombproof dog - no accidents or falls etc to suggests what's caused this.

My 6 year old Lab would hang his hind leg when he got up and then hobble, this took weeks to resolve and it was the result of an injury that I was completely unaware of.

I would take your dog to the vet, a stitch in time saves nine!

Springers are so stoic, it is really difficult to pinpoint where they are injured. Quite often mine have been "Nothing to see here" when examined, but turn out to have a significant problem. Get him checked, it may be something like a cruciate.
