Seasonal Canine Illness has no known cause but generally occurs after a dog has been walked in woodland - the crucial time period being August to November. On the site are clinical symptoms to watch our for such as vomiting, diarrhoea, tummy pain
and a list of places where the problem is thought to occur.

Better that you go and read up about SCI from the experts rather than me writing more.

Its quite alarming this year, how many new places have come up and right close by to us and more an dmore places are being added. The AHT will send latest info, to those who want to be on the SCI info list and keep up to date.

*Seasonal Canine Illness Update* The AHT has just been made aware of a cluster of possible seasonal canine illness (SCI) cases near Thetford with dogs becoming ill with clinical signs matching those seen with SCI cases.

At the moment we are awaiting confirmation as to whether these dogs had recently been exposed to woodland shortly before becoming ill, consistent with our current definition of SCI.

We have also had a report of another possible case in Nottinghamshire from a veterinary practice that has previously treated cases in the past few years.

Has there been any incidence of this mysterious 'disease' in other countries?

I am wondering if this illness has anything to do with those nasty hairy caterpillars which destroy trees; oaks etc.? They certainly cause breathing and skin problems in humans. Saw a programme about it the other night but cant for the life of me remember when or what the programme was called. It certainly does seem to occur when dogs are walked in woodland areas. Any ideas?

When I went to the AHT seminar which included a presentation on this, the current thinking is that it may be related to Harvest Mites, but why only in these areas is still not clear.
