It’s not a hard mouth issue if the bird isn’t damaged. Some dogs are so gentle, or sloppy, that they struggle with birds slipping out of their mouths and look like they’re mauling the bird by repeatedly trying to get a hold of it before they eventually manage to lift it. Interesting 🙄 Mine seems to bite down on a not dead bird in fact she seems to bite down a few times as though trying to ensure of a good grip, obviously the bigger the bird the more obvious it is. This is where it all gets a bit farsical. We train a gundog to be a gundog then don’t allow it to be a gundog on a shooting day because it might spoil our pristine model of a gundog. Usually a breakdown in steadiness is what we fear the most so we try to manage expectations by restricting retrieves...
