Re: Taking a line and not quartering

A strong turn and draw whistle should keep your dog in a pattern. Although here in America we allow our dogs to put there nose down and take a runner allowing a dog to take off on a bird it has air scented is not the best idea. Making the dog quarter up the field to the scented bird is preferred by ...

Re: It's all about the training!

I spend a lot of time with my dogs on yard work before shooting birds over my dogs so the first time my dog is shot over they are prepared and so am I.
Good training, consistency, and the relationship you have with your dog at home and in the field all play into developing a great partnership.

Re: Modern training methods

I have been thinking about this thread and "modern" training methods. There is not doubt that dog training has progressed a long way in the last few decades. If you are a positive trainer clicker training has been refined to teach almost anything and lots of experts to help you either thr...

Re: Right, Left ...joysticks for dogs?

Whether you handle the dog or let the dog figure it out please pick up the bird as quickly as possible. It is unfair to the bird to let your dog run around endlessly not in the area of the fall because you can't get your dog to the bird because it won't handle.

Re: Modern training methods

I have no problem with the video or training to a higher degree than is necessary. My experience is that most people just want "to shoot a bird over there dog" and do not care about having a properly trained dog. Poor deliveries and sloppy mouths are par for the course even in the trial wo...

Re: Training off-season

I try to keep training all year mostly because I really enjoy training and I think my dogs do too. It can be difficult to keep it fresh with my older finished dogs though. I will do a lot of water work, piles, lucky launchers and handling drills. I will also do some work on pattern with live birds w...

Re: Ever had a day.....

Had a cock up with my 16 month old this past weekend. First open trial and day one she was lovely. On the first day she even made it to the third series but due to some inexperience with scenting did not place. Day two I expected a repeat but that did not happen. She started at the end of the course...

Re: Dropping bird

Well I can only tell you what I have done but you will have to figure out how you want to proceed with your dog. For me there comes a time when I stop asking a pup to do what I want and start telling the dog what I want. So I will speak harshly if they mess with the bird and tell them to "fetch...

Re: Dropping bird

Can't really see what she is doing from the time you sent her till the time she brought the bird up to you but it sure seemed like a long time for a short retrieve? Maybe the bird was running? Or was she messing with it on the pick up? Anyway cant comment on that. It is also hard to tell if she is s...

Re: Dropping bird

I tend to look differently at this... Although I do believe a young dog can do this from being tired or just learning how to carry a bird correctly I believe a trained older dog that does this is being possesive. I have seen it become a ugly habit with my own dogs at times and now will give a stern ...
